When you have new carpet, it’s easy to take it for granted. It looks great, resists spills and cleans right up. But after a few years, slowly it’s not so easy anymore.
The high traffic areas can wear down excessively if ground-in soil is not removed daily. The dirt is very abrasive against the fibers of your carpet as you use it daily. Reacting to danger spots immediately is, however, important. Stains such as red wine, red beverages, or blood can cause permanent stains and can taint the appearance and quality of your carpet.Chem-Dry, the world’s largest carpet cleaning company, believes in efficiently maintaining your carpet with these effective steps:
1. Vacuum your carpet often before it gets soiled. Vacuuming at least once or twice a week to remove the sharp soil invisible to the eye that causes premature wear. Remove loose particles before vacuuming such as loose food, leaves or bugs which can create spots on the carpet.
2. Invest in professional cleaning by a respected company like Chem-Dry every 6-18 months. Professional cleaning is a good choice for removing damaging soil from very heavy traffic areas and can be done as often as needed. Stain resistant warranties require professional cleaning every two years. Cleaning it yourself can void your carpet warranty.

Otherwise, use a spot cleaner like Chem-Dry’s World Famous Spot Remover, recommended by a carpet retailer or your trained professional cleaner. Often, over-the-counter spot removers leave excess soap residue and cause yellowing. Do not use foam carpet cleaners or any product not specially made for the carpet. Apply spot cleaner sparingly to a white terry cloth and gently massage the spot. Never pour cleaner directly onto the carpet. For more tough stains, call your professional cleaner immediately.
4. Use protective coatings. After 6 months to two years, soil resistors such as StainMaster, Dupont Teflon or 3m Scotch-guard may partially wear off. Consider having the treatment reapplied after a professional cleaning with a hot carbonating extraction method of carpet cleaning to help remove soil and spots.
